The Grão Vasco National Museum was founded in 1916 and is located in the Paço dos Três Escalões, in Viseu. This building was classified as a National Monument in 1924 and was rehabilitated, between 2001/03, by Arch. Eduardo Souto de Moura.
The Grão Vasco National Museum has on display collections of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, jewellery and furniture, of national and foreign origin, that reflects various historical and artistic periods, with a chronology between the 13th and 20th centuries. Among the works on display, twenty-five are classified as National Treasures – artworks considered rare, unique and authentic, of great technical value and aesthetically innovative. From this set of outstanding works, deserve special mention the altarpiece paintings from the first half of the 16th century by Vasco Fernandes, known as Grão Vasco, one of the most important painters of the Portuguese Renaissance. Also noteworthy as National Treasures are sculptures in ivory and wood, a musical instrument and a painting by Columbano. The Grão Vasco National Museum develops a programme of activities that reinforces its attractiveness, as well as the city and the region. The programme includes temporay exhibitions, theatre, music and cinema. It also asserts itself as a space for education and knowledge, which responds to the interest of diferent audiences and as a promoter of inclusion and transformation by offering cultural mediation activities.
In the context of International Museum Day and European Night of Museums, the National Museum Grão Vasco participates in this event with a program consisting of concerts, guided tours, autonomous quiz visits, and presentations of literary works.
