The books and films based on Dracula (1897) and Frankenstein (1818) go beyond mere ‘horror’: they are also literary works which, in the 19th century, highlighted the spectacular advances in technology applied to the life sciences, as well as concepts regarding the spread of disease in the Victorian era.
Frankenstein and Dracula are closely linked to new ways of challenging death, disease and many of the beliefs associated with them. Electricity, knowledge of the composition of blood and the microbial theory of disease are themes that inspired Mary Shelley (1797–1851) and Bram Stoker (1847–1912) in the creation of their books and which will be explored in this Themed Tour, based on the collections of the Pharmacy Museum.
