On May 17th, at 10:30 AM, the Loulé Municipal Museum presents the initiative “The Museum is Yours”, an activity integrated into the International Museum Day celebrations. The event will take place at the Old Fish Auction Building in Quarteira, proposing an innovative approach to the exhibition “Feet on the Ground and Hands in the Sea – 6,000 Years of Quarteira’s History.”
Moving away from conventional tours, this experience will be led by a group of women from the Quarteira community, who transform factual history into a living narrative — sung and told.
The project’s premise explores how a museum collection can come to life outside of its display cases. The answer emerges through the voices of those who have lived and remained in this territory, revealing details that history books often miss. It is a work of co-creation where individual memory merges with collective heritage, revealing what lies beyond what is merely visible.
Staged and guided by Margarida Mestre, the script was collaboratively built by the participants, with historical support and text review by Daniel Giebels, and a segment dedicated to local "Nicknames" (Alcunhas) by Solange Guerreiro.
The project highlights the role of the Museum as a place of belonging, inviting every inhabitant to feel like an integral part of the institution. The voices leading the public belong to: Ana Coelho, Aurora Belchiorinho, Eduarda Gonçalves, Felisbela Rocheta, Gilberta Alambre, Isménia Correia, Licínia Correia, Mercês Pais, Solange Guerreiro, Teresa Pinto, Olga Calado, Manuela Mealha, Isabel Maria Jacinto, and Albertina Farinho.
The Loulé Municipal Museum invites the public to take part in this moment of sharing and to discover the "mystery of our presence" within the living history of Quarteira.
