The D. Diogo de Sousa Archaeological Museum is part of Museums and Monuments of Portugal, E.P.E., a public entity responsible for managing national museums and monuments. It also forms part of the Portuguese Museum Network, which ensures high standards of museological quality, conservation, and public service.
Recognised as a benchmark in the preservation and dissemination of the history of the Northwest Iberian Peninsula, the Museum was established with the mission of valuing the archaeological heritage of the region. Its collection brings together material evidence documenting human presence from the Paleolithic to the Early Middle Ages, enabling us to understand the long evolution of the communities that inhabited this territory. Among the most significant collections is that from the excavations of Bracara Augusta, whose richness and diversity highlight the importance of this ancient Roman capital and its decisive contribution to the construction of the historical identity of the modern city of Braga.
The exhibition also includes the prestigious Bühler Brockhaus Collection, comprising over 300 internationally significant pieces representative of Mediterranean art and culture in Classical Antiquity. This collection complements the Museum's main narrative, allowing visitors to establish connections between the Mediterranean world and local realities, thereby enriching the historical understanding of the territory. In addition to its collections, the Museum offers a comprehensive visitor experience, providing a specialised library, shop, auditorium, café, and extensive landscaped outdoor spaces with free access, inviting visitors to linger and enjoy their activities.
Its programme includes cultural and heritage mediation activities, as well as guided tours designed for diverse audiences. Among the initiatives developed, the efforts to disseminate archaeological research stand out, demystifying the scientific process and bringing visitors closer to understanding how the past can be reconstructed from the material remains that have survived.
