Museu de Lamego

Museu de Lamego

Lamego · Viseu

Located in the historic center of the city, the Lamego Museum was founded in 1917 in an eighteenth century building that once served as an episcopal palace. It belongs to a select group of centenary museums, whose creation reflects the impact of the application of the Law of Separation of Church and State (1911), which followed the establishment of the Portuguese Republic.

With a truly eclectic collection, it houses paintings, tapestries, furniture, goldsmithing, ecclesiastical vestments and means of transport, which were part of the furnishings of the former palace, later complemented by a series of chapels adorned with gilded woodwork, archaeological pieces, ceramics, prints, drawings and photographs.

The Flemish tapestry collection, woven in Brussels in the first half of the sixteenth century, the panels that Vasco Fernandes (Grão Vasco) painted for the Lamego cathedral at the same time, the seventeenth-century tile panels and a medieval tomb chest, all classified as National Treasures, form part of the most significant ensemble in a collection that is chronologically broader, with items dating from the first to the twentieth century.

Diverse and multifaceted, the collection offers a journey of discovery through the evolution of the city of Lamego and the men and women who have lived there over the centuries.

The Lamego Museum is a space for creative encounter, fostering meaningful connections for everyone through its collections, its building, and its history.

Closed to the public since May 2025, the museum is experiencing one of the most challenging moments in its long trajectory, as it rethinks itself and its role in contemporary society.

A museum as an active space for reflection and cultural participation, promoting a dynamic relationship between heritage, territory, and society through practices of listening and artistic creation.

A museum as a space that enhances cultural accessibility — not only physical, but also symbolic and intellectual — by developing diverse formats of participation and communication that bring heritage and knowledge closer, more legible, and more inclusive.
